The Present Club

I have lots of books and cuddly toys,

5 Barbies and Kens, Oh what a joy,

Playdoh and cars and puzzles too,

And more soldiers and guns than World War 2,

DVDs, stickers and glitter galore,

There isn’t much room for anything more!

So if for my birthday you’d like to bring me a gift,

You could chip into something big and give me a lift!

                                                                                  Georgette Hewitt (Director)

As a girl growing up in the 70’s, with war babies as parents, I know the majority of my generation would have had the same values drummed into them… “Do not waste!”

“It’s only a week out of date, it doesn’t smell bad, it’s fine!”

“It’s only -2, why do we need heating? Go and put a jumper go on!”

Which brings my husband and I all these years later, wanting to install the same qualities into our children. Well some of them anyway!

When our daughter’s have had their own Birthday parties in the past I have been so disheartened to see them returning home with 20 plus presents and within a week most of the toys have been dismembered, before being laid to rest at the bottom of their toy boxes. Never to be seen again. RIP.

On the flipside my children sometimes have 4-5 parties a week between them, so trekking into my local town and buying presents for their friends, I hate to admit it but I’m mainly driven by price than by what the child might prefer or by what they might already have. It's such a waste and I'm not proud. If I had the option to stay at home and contribute exactly what I wanted to a present I know the child would like, I would in an instant. It’s a win/win situation!
